Debunking Holocaust Denial: It Did Happen

Preface

This article serves as a direct rebuttal to common Holocaust denial claims circulating on social media. I am not Jewish, I have no Jewish ancestry, and I am not affiliated with any Jewish organization. I have no political allegiance to Israel. I am agnostic, hold a BSc and an MA, and studied the Holocaust as part of my Master’s research in human geography.
I have visited Auschwitz personally, read survivor testimonies and academic studies, and spent considerable time trying to understand the scale and reality of this atrocity.
This piece is not aimed at hardened deniers, but at those who may have encountered these claims and feel unsure what to believe. If that’s you, I hope this helps clarify the truth. With that said, let’s begin.

The Red Cross kept detailed records of all the deaths in the camps. (271k)

The Red Cross had limited access to camps and only to those deemed “acceptable” by the Nazis (like Theresienstadt). They had no access to extermination camps like Auschwitz, Treblinka, Sobibor, or Belzec. The 271,000 figure refers to recorded deaths in registered camps, not the extermination camps, where most of the Holocaust took place. The Red Cross itself has confirmed this many times. Additionally, many of the Jews who arrived at the death camps were immediately exterminated, so there would be no certificate. The Nazis went out of their way to hide the genocide, writing a death certificate for every Jew during an attempted genocide would not be advantageous to them in any way.

The Allies broke the SS codes and never saw evidence of a Holocaust.

The Allies did intercept communications, and decrypted German radio traffic showed clear evidence of mass shootings by Einsatzgruppen (mobile death squads). This was known and included reports like the Jäger Report, which detailed 137,000+ Jewish deaths in one region of Lithuania. Moreover, the scale and bureaucratic compartmentalization of the Holocaust meant that not every SS communication referenced gassing, and much of it used euphemistic terms like “special treatment” (Sonderbehandlung).

No order from Hitler for a final solution.

Hitler did not explicitly say “kill all Jews”, but why would he? The genocide was well hidden by the Nazis during World War 2, even many of the German people were unaware of it. The Wannsee Conference minutes (1942) clearly show planning for the extermination of European Jewry. Hitler gave speeches repeatedly implying genocide (e.g., his 1939 speech threatening the “annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe“).

Goebbels said Jews were going to Madagascar.

By 1942, Goebbels and other Nazi officials openly referenced extermination. Goebbels’ diary includes this line (March 27, 1942):

“The Jews are now being evacuated eastward… A pretty barbaric method, not to be described more precisely… not much will remain of the Jews.”

Prior to this, Madagascar was considered in 1940, however, it was scrapped.

Fred Leuchter found no Zyklon B residue at Auschwitz.

Leuchter was not a scientist, chemist, or engineer, and his “report” has been discredited. He took illegal, unsanctioned samples and failed to account for weathering, time decay, and chemical diffusion. The Kraków Institute of Forensic Research redid the analysis using proper methods and did find traces consistent with Zyklon B use. The ‘Leuchter Report’ is best debunked here in full https://www.auschwitz.org/en/history/holocaust-denial/leuchter-report/

“The basic German document on crematorium throughput, prepared by the Central Construction Board in Auschwitz on June 28, 1943, states that the five crematoria in the Auschwitz and Birkenau camps, together, can burn 4,756 corpses in a 24-hour period. This document indicates that the Birkenau crematoria could burn 1.6 million bodies per year.”

Paul Rassinier was in a camp and said otherwise.

Rassinier was a political prisoner, not Jewish, and was never in an extermination camp. He became a Holocaust denier later, relying on second-hand revisionist ideas. For a full debunk on Rassinier, check this link. https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/a-brief-history-of-holocaust-denial

“The claims of Rassinier can be easily refuted and have received full treatment by Deborah Lipstadt and other reputable historians. Briefly, however, Rassinier offers little evidence for most of his claims, he totally disregards any documentary evidence that would contradict his claims and attempts to explain away the testimony of survivors as “emotional” exaggeration and the testimony of accused war criminals as the result of “coercion.” For instance, he completely ignores Hitler’s stated agenda in Mein Kampf (1923) and his famous and oft-quoted speech of 1939 before the German Reichstag:”

Physically impossible to kill 6 million in the time reported.

I have touched on this claim in one of the previous ones, however, the 6 million number includes mass shootings, starvation, death marches, ghettos, forced labor, and gas chambers over multiple years. Treblinka alone killed 800,000+ in about a year using gas chambers. Crematoria at Auschwitz could dispose of thousands of bodies per day, and mass burnings in open pits also occurred. It is also worth noting that 3000 tons of documentation were used during the Nuremburg trials, including statistics and death models used by the SS themselves. Additionally, if 6 million Jews were not killed, where are they? We know they existed, we have documentation, so if they were not killed then where did they go?

Death camps were on the Soviet side, how did Hitler know where the Iron Curtain would fall?

He didn’t, concentration camps were put in occupied Poland because it was occupied, the SS controlled it firmly and it was heavily isolated due to Germanys reach. It also had the largest Jewish population, and the falling of the iron curtain happened after the war.

Jewish population numbers didn’t decrease.

The census document often quoted for this one was based on estimations before the war had happened. Pre-war Jewish population of Europe was around 9.5 million. After the war, it was around 3 million. That’s a decrease of over 6 million. Every serious demographer (Jewish or not) accepts this.

Rudolf Höss was tortured into confession.

Höss did later claim mistreatment during initial arrest, but he gave detailed, consistent confessions under no duress afterward, including at the Nuremberg Trials and in his own memoirs. His testimony is corroborated by mountains of Nazi documentation and other witness accounts. So, he may have been tortured, but if he told a lie because of it, it’s impossible the lie would correlate with the mountains of evidence and other testimonies.

Many died of starvation and Typhus, not extermination.

This is true for some Western camps (e.g., Bergen-Belsen), where infrastructure collapsed at the end of the war. But extermination camps like Auschwitz, Treblinka, Sobibor, and Belzec were deliberate killing centers, with gas chambers, crematoria, and systematic murder.

No mass graves or ashes.

Mass graves have been found at Treblinka, Babyn Yar, and Belzec, among others. In fact, Nazi efforts like Operation 1005 tried to destroy mass graves and cremate bodies to hide evidence. But forensic studies (e.g., GPR, ground-penetrating radar) have still found burial sites and cremated remains. Below are some examples of mass graves found.

Highest tattoo number was 135,913.

There were not 6 million Jews at Auschwitz, so, the number would never reach that high. Many of the new arrivals at the camp were immediately exterminated, tattoos were also not given all the time, and Auschwitz was the only camp to use tattoos in such a manner.

Gas chamber had a wooden door.

Photos of reconstructed chambers or disinfection chambers are often misrepresented. The actual Krema II and III at Auschwitz had airtight metal doors. The wooden doors were on undressing rooms or fake gas chambers for tour purposes. It’s an intentional distortion in an attempt to muddy the waters of the gas chambers and their capabilities.

There’s no smoke in aerial photos of Auschwitz or other camps, so they couldn’t have been burning bodies. The crematoriums weren’t running.”

The crematorium did not emit large amounts of smoke when operating at its maximum efficiency. When bodies are incinerated at high temperatures using coke (a smokeless fuel), the emissions are minimal, especially under efficient, continuous operation. The cameras used for these photos could not capture transient smoke wisps or low-lying emissions unless it was a full-scale fire, The Allied reconnaissance photos cited in these claims were often taken at high altitudes for mapping or intelligence, not to detect smoke. Rudolf Hoss even testified to the stench of burning bodies from the crematorium. When the Nazis did switch to open-air pits, the pits were located outside the crematoria, making it even less likely they’d be captured in standard aerial shots.

Death Camps

1.1 million Jews were killed at Auschwitz, 1.5 million from mass shootings by Einsatzgruppen, 2 million from ghettos/starvation/deportation/labor, 2.7–3 million in extermination camps (Auschwitz, Treblinka, Sobibor, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdanek). There were six main Nazi extermination (death) camps explicitly built for the systematic mass murder of Jews and other targeted groups during the Holocaust, primarily as part of Operation Reinhard. There were over 40,000 camps, subcamps, ghettos, and detention sites across Europe, but only these six were built solely or primarily for mass killing.

Gas Chambers

I have often seen the claim that gas chambers were not mentioned until the 70’s, American and Soviet liberation forces filmed evidence, and it was shown in the media in the 1940s. The Auschwitz trials in Frankfurt (1963–65) also extensively documented gas chambers, including blueprints, eyewitnesses, and photographs. The Nuremberg Trials (1945–1946) contained detailed testimony about gas chambers, with survivor and SS witness accounts. Moreover, delousing chambers and gas chambers were built differently, with key differences in ventilation systems, steel-reinforced doors and holes in the ceiling to drop the Zyklon B. Nazi blueprints labeled with terms like Leichenkeller (corpse cellar) and Sonderbehandlung (special treatment). SS officers testified to the differences of the two, and so did German architectures and engineers. Also, I have seen reels where gas chamber doors are shown to open from the inside. These are reconstructions and delousing chambers, if you are in a reconstructed gas chamber for tour purposes, you’d probably want to be able to get out from the inside.
