My Favourite Artist

Here is a video of me discussing a book I had recently read about my favourite artist and illustrator. Skip to the end to see a collection of my most enjoyed art pieces within the contents of the book.

Fun tidbit of information, I originally really wanted to use the thumbnail image as the cover for my book ‘Void Around Sunlight’. In the book, I pay homage to the biblical scene referencing the fight between God and Jacob directly. In the end, the copyright cost way too much to use Dore’s rendition, so I used Rembrandts instead. Not a bad trade-off! (see below)

Here is the text review I posted on Instagram.

Book review: The first half of this book serves as a history on Gustave Doré and his life as one of the most influential artists in France ever. Doré was an untrained prodigy who had received no academic tutoring on illustration or art. By the age of 5 he was already a notable artist, which can be seen in a letter he drew in. Furthermore, by the age of 16 he was the highest paid Illustrator in France. This occured after he had drawn for Charles Philipon proving his imaginative genius. One of my prized possessions is a complete copy of the divine comedy illustrated by Doré. This book is a beautiful mixture of bibliography and a showcasing of his art. Which I have attached a few of my favourites in this post. I am giving this book a 5/5.
