The Bicameral Mind by Julian Jaynes: Early humans heard schizophrenic like auditory hallucinations before they learned consciousness. Jaynes refers to this as the ‘God voice’, due to the phenomenology of the right hemisphere of the brain being transmitted to the left through auditory hallucinations. If this is the case then even great minds like Socrates would have been bicameral. This is also eerily supported by the fact that Socrates claimed to have a divine voice that guided him, known as ‘Socrates Daemon’.
Jean Baudrillard and Simulacra’s: This one served as an inspiration for popular media such as ‘The Matrix’. Baudrillard posits that simulacra’s are echoes of what was once original, a distortion of reality. Couple this with his theories on hyperreality, or that which is more real than reality (think the matrix) and we have a deep rabbit hole. Hyperreality has also been discussed when describing Marc Auge and his work on non-places, such as shopping malls made to look like French architecture. However, that is a topic worth a blog post on its own !
Itzhak Bentov and the cosmic egg: This one was originally classified by the CIA, and if you wish to begin digging into it I highly recommend the book ‘Stalking The Wild Pendulum by Bentov’. It essentially posits that through remote viewing experiments, the universe is holographic and what Bentov called a ‘dual toros’. The big bang began as a mushroom like explosion that will one day reach a dual toros (look into quasars for more information). This means that the cosmos will become a singularity, and turn into a black hole, before shooting out of the other side of the toros, known as a white hole. Complicated right ? the entire thing follows the flow of matter around the outer lines of the toros, and if correct means we are doomed to relive the same hologram life over and over again.
Solipsism by Gorgias: Sometimes referred to as a brain in a jar, solipsism posits that only your consciousness exists and everything else is a part of your hallucination. It could be said that modern neuroscientific terms such as interoception could be seen as support for this theory. We are a blind brain hallucinating our reality, but are we the only blind brain hallucinating our reality ? I will leave that one up to you. The Great Filter by Robin Hanson: Originally written as a solution to the fermi paradox, (if life in an infinite universe is so likely, why is there no evidence for it?). The great filter claims that the reason we do not see advanced life outside of our own is because there lies a great filter that stops evolutionary progression past a certain point. Hanson discusses this through a 9 step progression of evolution, step 8 being where humanity currently lies. He states that one of these steps must be impossible, or we would have life beyond our own making regular contact by now. Unfortunately, if humanity has made it to step 8, step 9 (Interstellar travel) is not looking good.
